Liverpool FC: Dominating On the Pitch, Leading Off It

While many expected Liverpool Football Club to take a step back following the departure of fan-favourite manager Jürgen Klopp last season, the team, under new leadership from Arne Slot has proved the doubters wrong. Liverpool clinched the Premier League title last week with a commanding 5–1 win over Tottenham, bringing their total to 20 league titles and tying Manchester United for the most in English football history.
Liverpool are not just making headlines on the pitch, they’re also setting a new standard off it through their purpose-driven mission and innovative sports partnerships.
Introducing The Red Way
The Red Way is Liverpool FC’s comprehensive sustainability programme, underscoring the club’s long-term commitment to people, the planet, and surrounding communities. The initiative is built on three pillars, Our People, Our Planet, and Our Communities, which guide sustainable practices across the club’s operations.
- Our People focuses on empowering players, staff, and supporters through education and training in ethics, equality, diversity, inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
- Our Planet seeks to reduce the club’s environmental impact by shifting to renewable energy, minimizing waste, and embracing sustainable innovation.
- Our Communities supports local and global initiatives, led in part by the LFC Foundation, delivering programs across education, health, and employment.
Since its launch, The Red Way has achieved remarkable milestones:
- A 29% reduction in carbon emissions during the 2022–23 season.
- 94% of club operations are powered by clean energy.
- An increase in matchday plastic bottle recycling rates from 25% to 90%.
- Over 123,000 people supported through community programming.
Strategically aligned with 14 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and certified under the ISO20121 sustainability management system, Liverpool FC became the first major European football club to earn this accreditation. Progress is shared annually in the Red Way Report, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Pioneering Climate Action with 1PointFive
Building on their environmental leadership, Liverpool FC has partnered with the U.S.-based carbon removal company 1PointFive to launch carbon-neutral fan products, a first in European football. This trailblazing collaboration sees the club conduct a full lifecycle assessment of its merchandise, from material sourcing to production, transport, and delivery.
Once the associated emissions are calculated, Liverpool offsets them by purchasing carbon removal credits from 1PointFive, which uses Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to extract CO₂ directly from the atmosphere and store it underground permanently.
The club now joins a group of high-profile clients including Microsoft, Amazon, and Airbus, and becomes 1PointFive’s first non-U.S. sports partner, following agreements with the NFL’s Houston Texans and MLB’s Houston Astros.
This initiative not only strengthens The Red Way but reinforces Liverpool’s role as a global leader in sustainable sport.

More Than a Club
Liverpool Football Club has long stood for more than just silverware. Rooted in a rich history of working-class identity, resilience, and unity, the club’s motto "You'll Never Walk Alone" is more than a chant; it’s a promise. Today, that promise echoes louder than ever, not just in the stands at Anfield, but across the communities and causes the club champions.
What sets Liverpool apart is its commitment to using its global platform to drive real-world change. While success on the pitch brings glory, the club’s off-field initiatives are building something even more lasting: a model of how sport can be leveraged for social and environmental progress. Whether it’s tackling climate change through industry-leading partnerships or delivering education and health programs to underserved youth, Liverpool is proving that football can be both powerful and purposeful.
In an era where fans are increasingly holding clubs accountable for their values, Liverpool’s actions, through The Red Way and the LFC Foundation, position the club not only as a footballing powerhouse but as a global leader in sustainability, inclusion, and community empowerment.
